Where industrial design became interface

Concepts for microwave ovens: controls in hardware and software, plus the interactive presentation.

For Matsushita, then the parent company of Panasonic, we developed concepts for microwave ovens. I worked in an industrial design office and took on the user interfaces, hardware as well as software: what appears on the displays, the knobs and dials, stepless or with detents. Much of it was built as models and sanded down, classic industrial design work.

The presentation took place in Japan. Alongside the models we produced a CD-ROM on which the concepts were presented and information could be retrieved interactively.

The team held several disciplines, others designed the housings. My work moved more and more towards the interface, simply because I was the one who could do it. That is where what later became my field began.
