AMD | Academy of Fashion & Design

Sixteen years of teaching: from technical fundamentals through design theory to supervising bachelor's and master's theses.

Sixteen years of teaching at AMD, grown out of a single teaching assignment. One or two sessions a week, plus workshops running over several days. Some eight subjects came together in that time. The arc from early technical fundamentals to supervising master's theses describes the school's development as much as my own.

I started with the technical subjects. Over many years that became a workshop on corporate identity, and design fundamentals followed. When AMD opened a programme in spatial design, I could bring back what I had studied myself: three-dimensional design and much of what product design attaches to it. The largest share over the years went to design theory, design philosophy and design studies. Those subjects led me into the tutorials.

For the accreditation as a state-recognised university I wrote curricula for individual modules. That is the work behind the teaching: not planning a semester, but describing what a module has to achieve so that it holds up when someone examines it from outside.

Accreditation brought the supervision of final theses. Every fashion design collection comes with a booklet, often a logo, a brand, a brochure as well. I supervised the work and, where it was needed, contributed to the design myself. Master's theses came last.

What emerged with the students was visible inside the school, and requests followed from it: the visual identity, brochures, the fashion show, the summer camp. That work ran as freelance commissions and is therefore documented on the AMD client page.
