North Star (Norton App)
By then NortonLifeLock no longer had a detection engine of its own — it had gone with the enterprise business. That is precisely why Avira was acquired. Which raised the question of how that technology reaches the buyer's products: put the engine behind the existing Norton interfaces, or move an Avira product onto the new brand. The second route was faster. macOS was the most dated Norton product. On the tokenised Umbrella system a complete brand switch came together in a short time, with little development effort — led by me, delivered by the team. In user testing the application was perceived as belonging to the brand. It was meant as the run-up to Windows; that never happened, as the merger with Avast changed every plan. How the underlying system came about is described in the [Umbrella Design System](../umbrella-design-system) case.

A launch-ready app in four weeks

"North Star" was the practical proof of our design system's white-label capability: a launch-ready Norton macOS app in about four weeks.

Background

A system turns strategy into speed

macOS was Norton's most dated solution. On the tokenised Umbrella system, a complete brand switch came together in short order with little engineering overhead, led by me, delivered by the team.
